What is ASP?
Autism Sharing & Parenting (ASP) is a volunteer-run, community-based support group that started in 2003 in parents' homes. It has grown to serve dozens of families, meeting once a month; alternating sites between Center City and Mt. Airy. ASP helps parents to be both their child's teacher and advocate. By providing speakers and resources to educate, inform and empower parents and professionals, ASP meets the needs of families. ASP always uses hands-on materials and sessions to encourage learning and interactive involvement.
The Goals of ASP are:
- To provide a support system for children with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder and their families.
- To educate under-informed and culturally diverse populations of Philadelphia about a variety of topics including special education law, inclusion, social and community engagement, special needs trust funds, behavioral interventions, health care coverage, therapies and research.
- To increase awareness of autism and autism related issues and advocate for children with ASD and their families.
